introduction 简介

I have ended up specializing in handheld nighttime photography. I especially like to photograph restaurants, stores, and street scenes with interesting lighting. For years I worked with a Canon 20D and the venerable EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS. In 2010 I switched to a Canon T2i, which was much lighter. Starting in summer 2012, I started doing most of my night shooting with a Canon S95 that fits in my pocket. While the photos that come out of the S95 are clearly not as good as the ones that come out of the T2i, the S95 fits in my pocket, and allows for more spontaneity. Especially when I'm traveling, I keep it with me at all times.

I shoot handheld because I like to wander the streets in the evening when I travel, and a tripod would be unwieldy and attract too much attention. The S95 is a big improvement in this regard in that when I am wandering around with it, I can keep it in my pocket, and attract no attention. When I walk around a neighborhood at night with an SLR around my neck, it attracts too much attention, and I became used to keeping my SLR in a rather non-descript man-purse that didn't attract any second glances.

Based on what I have learned in forums, I guess what I do wouldn't really count as street photography, or photojournalism. I like the people in my night shots to be shadowy, silhouetted, and anonymous. I'm going for a sort of Edward Hopper Nighthawks look of isolated and lonely figures against a lonely background.
