introduction 简介

I first traveled to China in 1987, when I was in college. I actually became interested in China in high school. I lived in the Midwest at the time and couldn't do much more than read books about it. Once I was in college, though, I had the opportunity to go there. I spent the year after college in Taipei and Beijing studying Chinese, and another year in Taipei studying more Chinese. I've been going back pretty regularly ever since.

One of my biggest regrets is that during my early trips, I didn't take many pictures. The country has changed so much since then, but I have nothing but my memories. Now I try to make up for it by going out every time I visit and doing some shooting, usually at night. The country is changing rapidly so I tend to focus either on neighborhoods that have already been made sleek and modern, or older neighborhoods that I suspect have a date with the wrecking ball.

There is much that I see that I would like to photograph but don't, because I'm not comfortable taking and posting really intimate or detailed photos of strangers. You may notice that in my photographs, most of the people are in shadow, or are silhouetted or blurred out. That is intentional. My reluctance stems largely from my experience of asking people in Chinese if they minded if I took a photo of them doing whatever they were doing, and receiving a polite no. My basic rule of thumb is that I won't take a photo with a person in it that I would object to if the tables were turned and I was the subject.

I visit Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Taiwan most frequently, thus most of my collections are from those places.
