About me 自我介绍

introduction

If you want to be alerted to new galleries, please subscribe to my Twitter feed or like my Facebook fan page. I also have a blog where I post occasionally.

I became serious about taking pictures when I began traveling on a regular basis to China around 2000 or so. I spent time in China and Taiwan on an occasional basis in the late eighties and early nineties, including long stints in 1990 and 1992/3, but unfortunately I didn't take many pictures. When I started going to Beijing again around 2000, I quickly realized that the world I had known there only 10-15 years before had disappeared. I decided to start taking pictures when I traveled so I could have some record.

I like to photograph scenes that suggest emptiness, alienation, and despair. When I do have people in my shots, I like them to be small, shadowy or silhouetted, and unrecognizable, moving across a cold and lonely cityscape. Perhaps I am inspired by Hopper and Caillebotte. I do have some people shots here and there, but I'll be the first to admit I have no future as a traditional street photographer or a photo journalist, since I basically am not particularly interested in getting close up and personal with subjects.

Photography is only a side interest for me. I have a day job that I will keep for the foreseeable future. I like taking pictures when I travel so I have a record of where I have been that I can share with friends and visitors to my site.

For a long time I shot with a Canon 20D, but as of June 2010 I have finally 'upgraded' to a Canon T2i. I suppose I should have upgraded to a 7D or the 60D, but I found the T2i really appealing not only because of its much lower price, but also because of its compactness and light weight. I do most of my shooting when I am travelling, and the T2i is easy to stow and carry.

I took most of the night shots with the Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS. Some shots were taken with a Tokina 11-16 f2.8. I have also acquired a 50mm f1.4, which I use mainly for portrait shots that are not yet publicly visible. I also have a 70-200 f4 IS which yields absolutely spectacular results, but I use it mainly for family shots that aren't posted here. Lately I have acquired a Tamron 18-270 which is turning out to be pretty remarkable. Sooner or later I will post some pictures.

If you like my pictures, by all means let me know, by sending an email, leaving a comment, or sending an instant message. I welcome links to my photo site or blog from other sites. If you mention one of my photos or blog posts in one of your posts, let me know so that I can reciprocate.

You can order prints or high resolution downloads for most of the pictures here. Almost nobody ever does, but I leave the shopping cart enabled just in case. I have disabled the shopping cart for some galleries devoted to landmark contemporary buildings, and some other facilities.

If you embed any of my images in a forum post, blog, or personal or non-profit web page, please be kind enough to provide a link to the gallery containing the photo and attribute the photo to Canghuixu.

Caillebotte.

Tokina11-16 f2.8, Canon 50mm f1.4,Canon 70-200 F4.
