I just came back from Beijing. I spent one evening wandering around the campus of Peking University (北京大学) taking pictures. I spent most of my time around Weiming Lake (未名湖). The Canon 17-55 EF-S f2.8 IS once again acquitted itself extremely well. There are lots of handheld shots at very long exposures. Here is the gallery. Here is a selection of my favorites.
There were several shots I was pleased with.

Bairro, not barrios
A visitor wrote to remind me that in Portuguese, neighborhood is bairro, not barrio. Ooops! I have begun correcting the web page.

Alto and Alfama bairro in Lisbon, Portugal, February 2008
I just came back from a trip to Lisbon, Portugal. The pictures are up here. Most of the pictures are from the Alto and Alfama bairro. Unfortunately, I didn't spend as much time in the evening taking pictures as I have in other cities because of safety concerns. I focused on what I thought were some of the more distinctive features of the streetscape: the narrow lanes and stairways, the tile exteriors of some of the buildings, and doors and windows.
If you want to go straight to a selection of favorites, you can do that here.
I was particularly pleased with this shot of a funicular, "Ascensor Da Bica":

I also liked the picture of some doorways in Alfama, close to the castle:
